Car Rental in Europe - Things You Should Know
By Hans Ericsson

Renting a car in Europe can be a great way to see more and enhance your vacation. The goal should be to expand your list of destinations, not your costs. Avoid any unexpected charges by being a well informed consumer. Here are some factors you definitely will want to think about if you plan on renting a car while on a European vacation.

"One-Way" Car Rentals

Round trip airline tickets often are cheaper if you are willing to fly in and out of two different cities. Unfortunately for the traveler, car rental agencies generally do not work this way. Many agencies charge what are known as "one-way" fees for picking up in one location and dropping off in another. If you plan on picking up in one country and returning in another, there will always be a one-way fee. If the rental takes place within the same country, often times there is no one way fee, but it is always best to check with your supplier first. If you need to get to one country from another, you can sometimes pick up in a major city, return to a border town, cross the country border, and pick up another rental car and be on your way.

Example: flying into Paris, flying out of Zurich, two week rental. Pick up your car in Paris. After a week or so, return it to the Geneva Airport, French side. Walk to the Swiss side of the airport to pick up another car. Return that car to Zurich.

This may seem like a hassle, but you will save big in the long run.

Advise of Travel Plans

Tell the rental agency in advance where you plan on taking the vehicle. There are often restrictions on travel into certain countries, and boarder guards have the right to deny you access with out the proper paper work. Clearing this up in advance can save a potential vacation disaster.

Explore Insurance Options

You generally have two options for insurance in Europe. The first option is to purchase it locally. If you do this, be aware of your deductible amounts. It is important to know exactly what you can be held financially responsible for in the event of damage or theft to your rental car. The second option is to find out if your credit card has rental insurance on it. If it does, you can normally take advantage of this service. It's a great way to get something back from your credit card company and will also save you money. Call your Gold or Platinum cards as you have the best chance of being covered by higher end cards. Be sure to mention all of the countries you plan on traveling to, or renting in.

Learn to Drive Manual Transmission

Most people book their vacations 3 months in advance, in some cases even more. Hardly anyone in Europe drives automatic transmission as it considered a luxury. This is reflected in the cost of your rental car. You can easily find yourself paying $300 USD more per week if you have to drive automatic. Take those three months to learn how drive manual transmission. Do keep in mind that if you burn out a clutch of a rental car, it's not going to be covered by insurance.

Local Fuel Policy

Many suppliers have started charging you for an entire tank of gas, and you are supposed to return the car as empty as possible. With today's gas prices, this could be a costly option. If you only need a car for a trip from the airport to your hotel and back, hire a personal transfer instead, most times the cost is about the same.

Know the Laws of the Land

There are no get out of jail free cards for tourists. Familiarize yourself with road signs, driving laws and speed limits before you get to Europe. If you are driving in the UK or Ireland be prepared for left side drive. You also need to know your license restrictions. Don't get caught without proper documentation or you may be forced to pay an "on the spot" fine. An international driver's license is the best way to do this, and is an inexpensive investment that will keep you on good terms with local law enforcement.

Request Your Extras

Most everything you could think of will need to be requested. Looking for GPS in a car rental in Europe? This is something that can help you immensely, and many companies offer them. Odds are however, you won't get it unless you book one in advance. If you are going to need a booster or a child seat ask in advance how much it will cost you. Why pay for the cost of a new seat when you could have just brought your own?

Be Aware of Additional Fees

Many locations charge airport pick surcharges of anywhere from 10-20%. That's two hundred dollars on a thousand dollar rental. The cost of a cab to a downtown office for a family of four with luggage is less than that. You may be tired when you arrive, but nine times out of ten, driving out of an airport is no less difficult than finding your hotel from a downtown office. Often times, they are very close.

When in Doubt, Ask Questions

The rental agencies are a resource for you to use! Take advantage of the maps, directions and valuable local experience that they offer. There can be things that are not always clear when it comes to your rental contract, make sure that you understand everything you are being charged for.

This list may be a little overwhelming at first, but it's important to cover your bases when overseas. You will be glad you did when you experience a hassle free, affordable car rental in Europe.

Happy Traveling! Hans Ericsson

The Fine Points of Hiring a Car - Car Rental Fees Must Know's
By Amy Nutt

Renting a car is never easy. The Internet is full of advertisements promising the best deal and they usually give a 'base price' in the range of £9 to £50 per day depending upon the size of the car. However, at most times the companies do not explain the hidden costs or even what constitutes the base price offered. Depending on which country the customer rents a car, the quantum of various fees varies. However, it is best to make informed choices when it comes to renting a car - keeping abreast of all the fees that make up your rental bill is the first step when you head out to your travel destination.

Most car companies demand a safety deposit the first time you rent a vehicle. This portion of the rental fee is fully refundable and may come to a couple of hundred dollars depending upon the size of the car. The car rental fee is next; this is the actual charge for renting the car. Most car rental companies also charge a 'contract fee' to cover the administrative costs of renting the car to the customer. If the customer requests for a delivery of the car and a place for collection of the returned car, the company may charge two separate fees, once for delivery and the other being the collection fee. Beware though! A collection point designated in a different state by the customer may attract anything up to a couple of thousand dollars as collection fees depending upon the distance of the collection point from the car company's home office. If the delivery is requested at the airport, a separate 'airport surcharge' will also be applicable. In addition, if the delivery or the collection is requested after normal working hours, an 'after hours fee' may also be charged. Traditionally, car companies charge a state taxes fee should the client need to drive across states. Driving across international borders may even attract a cross border fee - this is a mandatory fee that may be substantial and not easily waived. Also if you have an additional driver, an additional driver fee can also be charged.

Some countries also charge a tourism fee for tourists who wish to rent a car. Most US cities charge a flat rate as toll tax, and this can range from £2 to £5 per day. Some car companies also charge fuel charge fee or extra mileage fee. This may depend on what scheme of car rental the customer has opted for. Some companies go by a set number of kilometers driven per day or set number of hours per day. Any excess kilometers or time is then charged as extra fee. In case the customer requires a baby seat or a ski rack then additional fees are required to be paid. In some countries being young, usually under the age of 25, attracts extra fees in the form of younger driver fees. Again look out for the hidden fees. With fancy names such as collision damage waiver (CDW) fees, you may pay hefty sums as much as £15 a day. This fee is not actually collision insurance but more as a guarantee that the rental company will pay for any damage to the rental car, along with a caveat of some 'deductibles'.

Finally if you intend to return the car earlier than planned, don't hope for a sizeable refund. Many companies actually penalize you for cutting the rental duration; an early return fee becomes admissible! It is therefore extremely important that you - a prospective customer - are attentive to the ads and the terms and conditions of hire before signing up for a car rental. If you take renting seriously, consulting your car insurance company or your credit card company before hiring a car would be a great idea. In the end, don't fall for tall claims and false promises; choose your rental company prudently and have a worry-free vacation!

When looking for car rentals be sure to do all your research before selecting a car rental company, as there are many fees which these companies try to levy on customers when they try returning the rental car. Do your research and hire the best car rental company available in your area.

I don't normally write any views as I can't be bothered. But I may say that having read a few articles and been surprised at the content I feel obliged to comment. I have been both entertained and inspired by almost everything I read. This is strange for me because I'm a couch potato. Don't ever give up adding to your site.

24-Hour Drive versus Hire Car

Travelling to Spain from the UK by land has always been a feat of endurance, but more and more holidaymakers are taking on the drive.

While you must take your hat off to those that try such a huge feat of driving, there are other factors that many holidaymakers forget about. Driving for those who drive for a living could expect a more favourable response.

Driving is a tiresome event. From Northern France to Almeria in Spain you can expect a 1500 mile drive. To speed the journey up you can use the toll roads through France and Spain. The expenses for these tolls vary from 10 Euros up the 35 Euros; plus you could expect to top up your fuel tank about 3 times. Fuel of course in France is more expensive than Spain, but both cheaper than the UK.

The total cost for tolls and fuel for such a journey would be: tolls approximately 150 Euros and fuel about 180 Euros. While that is a toil in itself on your wallet, if you have three other passengers you will have reached Southern Spain in an economic fashion. The Channel Crossing can vary with a car and four passengers varying from 120 Euros to 280 Euros. Suddenly the economy is put into question. But don’t forget you need to find this expense and effort to do the return journey.

When planning a holiday we must consider both the financial cost and the human cost such as tiredness. Without doubt tiredness can spoil the holiday for the driver. Once the driver has waken in the morning he may feel reasonably fresh but by mid afternoon drowsiness and tiredness sets in for the rest of the day. This lethargy can stay around for a few more days into the holiday once the destination has been reached.

In this study, a comparison of the long drive and the costs involved, versus the airfare and the use of a hire car at your destination airport. Here are the results we found…

July and August are the only months that differ. So for 10 months of the year the financial cost to drive is more expensive than to fly out and use a family hire car. In fact the comparison means that you would save between 50 to 75% of the value of the long drive.

Meanwhile the extra hike in the airfares for the peak summer season brings the competition to an almost dead heat; with the only balancing factor being the driver tiredness. Fly and use a hire car and you will have a driver with you to enjoy the holiday. Drive down and you may find that the driver is more of a ghost for a few days while he or she recovers.

The overall conclusion from this study is the air flight puts less pressure on the family holiday than would a long drive. For those who thought the drive would be so much more economical need to go back and check their calculations.
